DR RAMY BISHAY

BSc (Hons), MSc (Hons), MBBS (Hons), FRACP

Specialist Endocrinologist

I'm an endocrinologist who offers an integrated approach to hormonal imbalances. I have a strong desire to see my patients succeed in improving their health, such as losing weight (and keeping it off), improving their diabetes control, or getting on top of their thyroid problem, thyroid cancer, polycystic ovaries, osteoporosis, fertility, androgen, adrenal or pituitary disorder.

Once being nearly 120 kg, I've managed to lose 45 kg (and keep it off). I believe that weight loss doesn't have to be mysterious and that you don't need gym memberships or follow the next fad diet.

I was a staff specialist endocrinologist and clinical director of the Metabolic and Weight Loss Program at Blacktown-Mt Druitt Hospital and current a visiting medical officer (endocrinologist) at Norwest Private Hospital.

I completed my endocrinology and physician's training at St Vincent's, Concord, Blacktown and St George Hospitals.

I'm passionate about teaching students and give regular lectures and bedside teaching as senior lecturer for Western Sydney University. and former lecturer at University of Sydney.

I've published several dozen publications (including a book) and have given talks at both national and international conferences in endocrinology and the fields of obesity, thyroid disease, diabetes and osteoporosis. For a list of my publications, please click here:

I enjoy watching espionage films with my wife, Sundays in church with family, writing scientific papers and playing superman with my twins and toddler.

WHAT IS ENDOCRINOLOGY?

Endocrinology is the study of hormones made by your body that control normal functions day-to-day. A hormone is either a steroid or a protein signalling molecule that influences normal physiology by maintaining normal:

  • Blood sugar levels (insulin)

  • Metabolism, temperature and growth (thyroid hormone)

  • Periods and fertility (gonadotrophins, insulin)

  • Breastfeeding (prolactin)

  • Maintaining bone density and quality (parathyroid hormone, vitamin D, thyroid hormone, and insulin growth factor-1)

  • Growth (growth hormone and insulin growth factor-1)

  • Sexual arousal (testosterone)

  • Stress and metabolism (cortisol)

  • Calcium levels (parathyroid hormone)

  • Stress and 'flight or fight' response (adrenaline, noradrenaline)

  • Blood pressure (aldosterone, renin)

Endocrine disease happens when one (or more) of these hormones are no longer in balance.

WHAT IS NEPHROLOGY?

Nephrology is the study of kidney disease. Your kidneys are vitally important to maintain your blood pressure, levels of haemoglobin, fluid and volume, salts in your blood and maintain to control your calcium, vitamin D, parathyroid, phosphate levels and bone health.
